Color Studies

Between projects, it's important to take time to play and explore with various media. The images above are taken from a series of color studies made with Prisma color pencils on Reeves paper. I was interested in the visual depth and surface quality achieved through line, color, and light - inspired in part, by nature.

University of Cincinnati Directories

Graphic work highlighting architectural, historical and cultural themes resulted in a running series of cover designs for the faculty / staff and student directories at the University of Cincinnati

The cover designs were drawn by hand at full scale using technical pens and india ink.  Colors were applied at the printers using a two color printing technique.  For the first directory cover, complementary hues of green and red created an intense “afterimage”affect - recognizing a societal transition emerging from the physical realm to the digital realm. For the second directory cover, a yellow / blue composition designated the student directory, and a red / black (University of Cincinnati colors) designated the faculty / staff directory.  The figure / ground composition of both west and east campus registers the physical context of an evolving campus plan.  The idea was to direct attention to the physical plan of the campus and raise consciousness about the campus plan. The third directory cover is identified with a network of gold lines on a blue field representing the pedestrian and vehicular circulation paths throughout west and east campus. The golden shapes that emerge out of the chaos of vectors and intersections, suggest a pooling of energy that takes shape from the physical and cultural nature of the campus’ newly proposed plan - unveiled that year. The fourth directory looks back in time to acknowledge various milestones at the university and uses the evolving UC seal as a figural and transforming element highlighting 175 years for the University of Cincinnati.
