is designed for people to lounge comfortably and/or sit while talking in a variety of physical, social, and cultural settings.  The design is conceived to be used in an large, open, interior space. Dü enables a variety of social-interactions between two or four people - designed for individuals to communicate, talk, or repose, celebrating and enhancing daily human interaction.

The form is fabricated from laminated bending birch plywood mechanically attached to cold-formed metal frames. The design is functionally enhanced with the incorporation of a 6”wide arm rest and ¾” thick, neoprene padding applied directly to the Baltic birch plywood.   



Music Machines

Music Machines is a suite of furnishings designed and fabricated to organize stereo equipment, records, tapes, and CDs and deliver music.  The furnishings include a movable stereo equipment tambour, a record/CD tambour, a cassette tower, and two custom fabricated, ported speakers.  The furnishings are made from Baltic birch plywood, cherry, 16 ounce sheet copper, neoprene 70, ebony, glass wheeled casters, and 1/8 inch bending birch plywood. The record/CD and cassette tower pieces contain sources of music and are interactive, while the stereo tambour organizes the stereo equipment that produces the music. Custom fabricated speakers deliver sound through three-way, ported speakers that rest firmly on neoprene bases.

Jimmy Buffet

Jimmy Buffet organizes linens, flatware, serving utensils, candles, silverware, and dining accessories for storage, display, and easy retrieval.  The top of the buffet is designed for serving and displaying food.  The buffet includes ten full-extension drawers, each 16 inches deep - composed in a variety of widths - ranging from 6 ½” to 24” (16.5 x 61cm), and located at a variety of heights ranging from 6 ½” to 36” (16.5 x 81cm) above the floor.  Six clear-acrylic casters enable the buffet to freely move about the interior space.

Certain fundamental issues surface in my furniture design. How might the process of making influence the final result?  What are the connections between conceptual ideas and the material properties of built-form?  What cultural or societal aspects give shape to form?  These questions are raised and explored through designing and making furniture.
